As a child, I distinctly remember experiences in the early evenings, myself, worn out from a day of extracurricular activities, eager to return home. I recall pulling into the driveway of our house, seeing each shrub lit brightly, lining the front porch, as my eyes settled upon the glowing pathway to our front door. Our home, illuminated in a sea of unlit houses, provided a sense of calm and of peace, with each bulb acting as an almost quiet invitation; Welcome home.
The summers were spent swimming and eating by the pool, and as the sun began to set, as a child, I grew discouraged for the dark sky meant that the day was ending, as would the merriment. As I grew older, I began to see what power the outdoor lights actually held. The sun may have set, but with a flick of a switch, the experience we had just enjoyed had been enhanced to an entirely different atmosphere. Outdoor lighting allowed for the continuation of happiness, togetherness and overall enjoyment.
The truth is a lot of the moments we encounter throughout our lives aren’t even registered as important or noteworthy until later down the line when our brains are triggered by an event, visual experience, smell, etc. that brings us back to that moment in time. Those nights I returned as a child to a well lit home after a long day, the summer evenings where all it took was a flick of a switch to allow for the continuation of fun, those are the noteworthy moments.
Those are the ones that shape our lives. Outdoor lighting helped to shape mine.
