MATT TAYLOR

Matt Taylor has 14+ years of design/project management in outdoor lighting. Matt has close to 1500 successful projects, and many award-winning projects. This includes winning LCA and ASLA/ Regional and National Awards every year for 12 years running.

Matt has been leading lighting sales at OI for over 12 years and specializes in creative design and project engineering. Matt has played semi-pro soccer since 1997.

Matt is someone you want to work with. He works with the areas leading architects, landscape architects, artists, landscape designers, and custom builders.

PETE STRAIN

Over 18 years of experience in landscape lighting creating practical and beautiful green spaces from residential roof decks to large commercial structures.

Involved in all aspects 12 Volt and 120 Volt design, installation and service.

Worked with manufactures in design and product testing of fixtures.

Energy audits commercial and residential.

Preformed and over saw Pepco’s energy incentive programs for commercial an institution energy savings program. Perhaps most importantly – loves lighting.

BARBARA KULP

Designing (and overseeing the installation of) landscape lighting at Outdoor Illumination since 2005. Degrees in landscape design, engineering and business.

Interest in sustainability and a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional – LEED AP BD + C

Enjoys the intersection of art and nature in built design. Most unusual recent lighting project was a troll under a bridge!

RICHARD SCHOENBECK

Richard previously worked in the landscape industry. He perfected his skills in designing, installing, and servicing landscape lighting in the residential and commercial field.

His responsibilities included 15+ years management, lighting, irrigation, drainage, gutter protection, holiday décor and customer service.

He has numerous published articles on various lighting techniques.

Responsibilities included scheduling, customer service, enhancement sales, system troubleshooting, training, special ordering, safety training

BILL WINSTON

Bill Winston is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design. Having worked in several parts of the country and within multiple disciplines revolving around Architectural Lighting, Bill brings his vast 25 years of experience to Outdoor Illumination. Seeking out both training and instructional opportunities, he is continually educating himself and others on the newest of technologies and design ideas. Bill is able to push the envelope with new design concepts and successfully apply the latest technologies with tried and true practices to achieve sustainable and practical lighting systems to last a lifetime.

MATT DAVIS

Matt Davis is in his second year with Outdoor Illumination. We’re excited to announce his promotion to Senior Design Engineer for Irrigation. Matt will be taking over for Kevin Lowery, who is now a Manager in Irrigation at Ruppert Landscape in Frederick.

Matt grew up in Severn, Maryland. When he was 14, Matt moved to North Dakota, where he lived for 9 years. Matt “fondly recalls” wind chill temps dropping to 60 below zero.

Matt worked with Green Valley Ranch Landscaping in Denver, Colorado for 5 years, performing Irrigation, hardscaping, and planting work. He moved back to metro Baltimore/DC in 2016, working with Brightview, where he specialized in Irrigation for 5 years.

He’s married with 3 kids and lives in Germantown. Matt enjoys hiking in nature, alone or with his family, and he enjoys mechanical problem solving – at home or work. Matt Davis is one of FOUR Matt’s in our firm, including Matt Meiklejohn, Matt Taylor, and Matt Williams, who have been with our firm for a combined 40+ years. Needless to say “Matt’s rock our world!”

CAROLINA

GEORGE HARTNER

Along with his wife, Jane Cockrell, Hartner launched Outdoor Illumination of the Carolina in 2005. His designs include Lumina Station, Airlie Gardens, Audi Cape Fear, Kenan Chapel, BeauCoast, Barefoot Landing, St Andrews on the Sound and hundreds more.

Hartner has a true passion for lighting. “I see it as an art much more than a science. I love to be at the projects the very first time we turn on the lights. There is magic in that moment.”

Hartner has a BA in Communications from Cortland State University and his passions don’t stop with lighting. He is an avid surfer and a musician. “Lighting, like music and surfing, allows me to express myself in very creative ways.”

Hartner is also proud of the company’s commitment to quality and service. “We use only the best products from the best manufacturers. Our installations follow a rigorous process that ensures systems will last a long, long time. We also provide follow up service to provide maximum customer satisfaction.”

BILL WATSON

Watson joined the OI team in 2016 to head up the company’s growing presence in the Raleigh and surrounding areas. One of his primary areas of focus will be on the partnership Outdoor Illumination has with Preston Development.

“We have designed the lighting for their corporate offices in Cary and we are in the planning stages to work with them on their Chatham Park initiative which will be an on-going effort lasting many years. They are truly the type of company we like to associate ourselves with as their commitment to quality is unparalleled.”

Watson is a former executive at IBM. He is not only a very experienced business leader but a practicing artist as well. With an emphasis on visual composition and use of light and shadow, Watson’s paintings have been shown at juried exhibits throughout the region.

CJ BOWDEN

My Mother once said that I spent three quarters of my childhood “fiddling” in the garden as a kid – it’s always been a passion of mine. It sounds like a cliché’, but we REALLY love what we do and the payoff is seen in the eyes of the clients we work with that first night the lights come on. Exceeding client expectations is what we strive for – and I think we do that 99.9 percent of the time. Although most Landscape Architects have a good sense of what they want to accomplish in terms of their lighting visions… most homeowners do not. They just don’t know what’s possible. We always look beyond the norm to create unique yet suitable lighting that extends the indoor living area to the outdoors.
